Labeling Engine

Labeling is a type of image processing wherein input image data, from a camera or other source, is processed to extract portions that have a particular meaning.

This process is used in a variety of fields, including visual inspection equipment (flat panel display inspection, character recognition, electronics component visual inspection, etc.), pattern recognition, and robotics.

IPFlex has developed a labeling engine powered by DAPDNA-2 dynamically reconfigurable processor.  The labeling engine implemented on the DAPDNA-2 provides a quantum leap in customer system performance.

   Problems in image processing systems

The camera performance used in image processing systems is increasing at a very rapid rate.  The processing speed of visual inspection equipment, however, is not keeping pace. Because of this performance gap, it has been difficult to improve the overall performance of visual inspection systems.  Labeling is a function used in many such image processing systems.  The speed and precision of the labeling process is a major driver in improving the processing efficiency of image processing equipments

Achieving ultra fast data transfer rate

DAPDNA-2 provides high-speed parallel and pipelined processing capability, as well as one-clock dynamic reconfigurability of its processing algorithms.  By bringing these capabilities together, DAPDNA-2-powered labeling engine solution is capable of performing complex labeling and feature extraction in real time at an input image data rate of 320Mpixel per second (see Note 1), 5-10 times above existing solutions.

The labeling engine makes it possible to meet market demands for more speed and complexity, and enables a quantum leap in overall system performance.

   Dramatically reduced development cycle

IPFlex delivers a labeling engine solution customized to the particular needs of your application.  Further, the DAPDNA-FW II integrated development environment software allows you to create hardware code for DAPDNA-2 directly, using a C-like programming language.
You can also use DNA Designer development tool, which provides a GUI environment for drag-and-drop connection of the processing elements (PE), to develop algorithms graphically.  These tools can greatly reduce system development cycle.

Toward higher performance image processing systems

The dynamic reconfiguration capability of DAPDNA-2 makes it possible to embed not only the labeling functionality but various other types of functionalities to process data while automatically and instantaneously switching between functions.  The dynamic reconfigurability of DAPDNA-2 adds another dimention of flexibility in hardware.

Note 1: The 320Mpixel/s input image data transfer rate depends on the particulars of the required labeling process.
